For many of us, the idea of jumping back into the workforce or stepping up our career game can feel overwhelming, especially if we’ve been out of the traditional job scene for a while. If you’re like many of the ex-traditional wives (or “trad-wives”) I work with, you may have years of life experience and skills that need to shine for employers, but where to start? Look no further than LinkedIn! This platform is not just a digital resume—it’s a powerful tool to grow your network, amplify your voice, and secure job opportunities that align with your goals.
Here are five key steps to make LinkedIn work for you as you step confidently into the next phase of your career.
1. Optimize Your Profile with a Clear, Compelling Headline
Your headline is prime LinkedIn real estate! It’s the first thing people see, and it should tell them what you’re all about. Instead of “Looking for New Opportunities” (yawn!), go for something more specific. For example, “Customer Service Specialist | Skilled in Conflict Resolution & Efficiency Management.” Highlight what you bring to the table and make it relevant to your ideal role.
Your headline should also align with your desired industry and speak to skills that set you apart. This way, potential employers or connections know exactly who you are and how you can help.
2. Develop a Value-Driven ‘About’ Section
The ‘About’ section is your chance to tell your story. Here, focus on how your unique experiences—whether professional or personal—translate into valuable skills. You’re not just “a mom re-entering the workforce”; you’re a master of logistics, a time-management pro, and a multi-tasker like no other!
Explain your career goals, core skills, and any highlights from previous roles or recent projects. Let your audience know why you’re a strong fit for your target roles. Avoid buzzwords like “motivated” or “hard-working” without giving examples; instead, back up your strengths with real-life scenarios.
3. Engage with Content Regularly
This is where LinkedIn becomes much more than just a resume. Engaging with content—whether by sharing articles, commenting on posts, or publishing your own insights—builds your presence and credibility. Comment on industry trends, share experiences from your journey, and don’t be afraid to post questions to spark discussions.
Start by following thought leaders, industry groups, and companies in your target field. LinkedIn’s algorithm favors users who regularly interact with content, so the more you engage, the more visible you become. A little activity each week can make a big difference in the long run!
4. Build Your Network Strategically
Quality beats quantity when it comes to LinkedIn connections. Instead of just adding anyone and everyone, seek out connections who are aligned with your career goals. Connect with people in your industry, recruiters, potential mentors, and even friends who are active on the platform.
When sending connection requests, personalize them! Mention why you want to connect and, if possible, refer to something you admire about their work. This small effort can lead to genuine relationships and open doors to opportunities you hadn’t considered.
5. Highlight Skills and Get Recommendations
LinkedIn’s Skills & Endorsements section is a golden opportunity to display your relevant skills. Choose up to 50 skills that align with your ideal career. Make sure your top three skills are highly relevant, as these appear first on your profile.
Don’t hesitate to reach out for recommendations! Former colleagues, clients, and even people you’ve volunteered with can provide testimonials that reinforce your capabilities. Recommendations not only build trust but also serve as proof of your expertise and character.
