2 Things to do…Before, During and After the Job Interviews

If you are applying for new jobs and getting interviews, then know you are doing something right. Your career tools are working for you. Your resumes and cover letters are getting past the applicant tracking system, also known as ATS into human hands. Ok, so your landing job interviews and the whole process makes you nervous right? I totally understand. I still get nervous when I have business meetings and do interviews, but I also have preparation, strategy and specific goals already established before attending any of those interviews. I want you to be armed and ready to handle those job interviews, like the professional that you are.

In this video, I go over two things you need to do BEFORE THE INTERVIEW…DURING THE INTERVIEW & AFTER THE INTERVIEW to increase your chances of getting the career opportunity/job you want.

BEFORE THE INTERVIEW (Do these two (2) things)
1. Ask for all the interviewers full name and titles. You want to be prepared for a panel interview or one-person interview. Bring the appropriate amount of resumes based on the number of interviewers. Thinking about it more, bring some extra copies of your resumes, just in case.

2. Ask about the appropriate the dress code for the interview, if it is in-person. You want to be prepared for what the interviewer may be expect from you.

DURING THE INTERVIEW (Do these two (2) things)
1. Ask the interviewer this question: What personality type are you looking for to fill this position?
It allows you to obtain information about what type of environment they are looking to create with the person in this position. Please take notes, so you can be prepared to respond positively. This question will also reveal the overall company culture and the mindset of the interviewer responding to it.

2. Ask this other multilayered questions: Did you recently create this position? If not, did you recently loose the employee filling this position due to retirement or termination? If so, what were some of the positive things the last person in the position did right? What were some of the areas that need development that you are hoping to correct with the next candidate?

AFTER THE INTERVIEW (Do these two (2) things)
1. Follow up with the interviewer/employer by writing them a thank you letter sent via email or snail mail. You may also want to send them a handwritten thank you card.

2. Ask about the timelines in them making their decision on the candidate choice. Follow-up with them again via email, if you do not receive a response from them within the timeline they specifically told you.

How prominent company ignores their HR Dept

It’s been all over the news about the abrupt departure of Gabrielle Union from AGT or also know as America’s Got Talent after serving on the show for only one season. Based on the information being communicated by the press so far, the departure may have been due to alleged mistreatment of her and other employees on the basis of race and gender. From what has been reported so far, there has been no formal charges filed but the network’s reputation of treating people unfairly is not new.

From an #HR standpoint, the network is not using or listening to their human resources department or they would not have been in this position in the first place.

As as business owner/entrepreneur, you want to avoid these type of compliance issues because they can cost your business their amicable reputation. If, as a business owner, you struggle to maintain compliance with these and other employment laws, reach out to me here so we can connect.

Sometimes, They choose another candidate…KEEP GOING!

In your career process, you go through the necessary steps of applying for jobs, getting called or email about the interview #1, then interview #2…then you wait…..and wait…..and wait….only to get the email or the call that they went with another candidate.

It happens to all job seekers and it’s part of the job search process. Not every job you #interview for belongs to you. This is the reason I encourage all of you to treat your job search efforts like entrepreneurs treat their lead generation process….just go through the numbers. Don’t take it personal, it is truly just business.

With the numbers game #mindset…you will have so many applications submitted, interviews being setup to attend, you will not have time to focus on the job you didn’t get. Just keep going and run through the number until you get the career opportunity you truly want.

If you have ever been in a business or search for employment, you have heard the word “networking” thrown around as being an important part of your business development and job search. You are encouraged to attend networking events and polish off formulate your “elevator speech” to fire it at any human being within a 3 arms length away from you. The goal is to meet new people you hope are looking for your skills (for a job) or looking to do business with you.

What type of results do you think you will achieve with these events? What is your mental focus when you attend these events..just to place your business card in people’s hands or to truly make an authentic connection that lasts? Do you think the other attendees have the same wants and needs that you do? These are just some of the questions you should ask before even attending.

I recently started reading the book, Networking is Not Working by Derek Coburn which give a completely different perspective on networking in general. I learned that our mindset and intention when going to networking event is extremely vital to the efficiency of networking results. Every deliberate result starts with a thorough plan of action and purposeful execution, so your networking efforts should be no different.

When attending these events, go with the mindset of actually making a genuine connection with a few people and continue to keep in contact for mutually beneficial results. It is not always about what you can get from a person, but it is also what you can give that provides value to them personally and professionally. You must take the time to get to know their basics, by listening. I don’t mean just let people talk, I mean really listen. Listen for wants, needs, desires, wishes, voice tone, how they communicate about specific topics and their non verbal queues. You’d be surprised what people will divulge if you just really listen, then offer support. This is where true networking begins.

Be Mindful How You Treat People…
