StoryTime Career Series – Episode 2: Toxic Work Environment

This is second of the StoryTime Series on my podcast and YouTube channel sharing stories of all of our experiences in the world of careers, jobs, contract work, independent consulting and business interactions. In the second episode, I share one of my experiences while working in a toxic environment. The names, dates and other information were kept confidential to protect the innocent or guilty party.

The objective is the learn and grow from our professional and personal experiences to become a better version of ourselves, professionally. This particular story hits home and taught me so much about myself and the level of restraint I earned during that time. If it wasn’t for a great friend talking me off the proverbial ledge on a weekly basis, I probably would have been arrested for physical assaults and verbal altercations. The tension was thick and my stress level went through the roof! I am grateful to have survived it without loosing my composure.

What did I learn from this experience?

I learned that people and their preconceived notions are so strong, it allowed them to spread malicious lies about other people’s character. Keep in mind, they never took the time to get to know the individual but somehow felt entitled to assume things about people. Needless to say, the very sword those people intended to injury others, they ended up falling the same swords.

I learned corporations set up “certain people” for failure. For example, training some employees on the 25% – 30% of their duties while training other employees on 90% of their duties. They followed up by measuring each employee’s job performance without the same level of detailed training. So the employee with 30% of the training will never perform at the level of the employee that received 90% of the training. When questioned about why the training levels are different when the expectation of performance is the same, you receive responses like “training is a privilege“.

I learned that we all have a choice with the work environment we choose to spend our time. In my case, this employer terminated me for job performance, when I received less than 50% of the necessary training to be successful. It was the second termination from a job that I felt relief! The relief of not ever setting foot in that toxic environment.

If you find yourself having to self-talk your way into the doors of your job every morning…just so you don’t want the entire place to explode while you’re on a lunch break…It’s time to get a concrete career plan specifically tailored to you leaving that toxic environment for GOOD! Where was the professionalism in the debate?

In every profession, professionalism should never be compromised. Based on the performances between the 2 presidential candidates last night, Professionally was completely absent. In this video I talk about how the debate showed little to no professionalism between the candidates.

Why your career success is YOUR responsibility

https://anchor.fm/mentor-shelly/episodes/Episode-130-Why-your-career-success-is-YOUR-responsibility-ea7j21 (Listen on the podcast)

You didn’t expect your parents to make you successful as an adult did you? Your parents have done their job of raising you to be a responsible adult….now it’s time to show them what and how you can use all the great principles of adulthood to good use.

As I’m writing this, I also realize that not everyone had the same upbringing or even had parents to teach them about being responsible adults. You have had to learn quite a bit about life on your own, so I understand.

I want all of you to know…no matter your background, past or circumstances, the success or failure you achieve in life is completely and totally, your responsibility and within your control. Once you reach the ripe old age of eighteen (18), you are officially an adult. If your parents or anyone else helps you financially, economically or in any way, it’s a bonus. Be grateful! They are not obligated to help you, so if they do…please do not take it for granted and show some gratitude.

The heights of your #career and #business ventures are completely in your arsenal of control. I want you to take charge of your destiny, but I want you to know something extremely vital. You must have FOCUS and you must HAVE A PLAN to keep your overall career and business development focus in check.

If you do not have a plan or still trying to figure your next career move, then I can certainly help you with that…I have a guide that help you get focused and create a plan for your career venture or business development. You can access the DREAM CAREER GUIDE by going here.

If you’re looking for for a more direct and concrete plan for your business or career development, then schedule a “CAREER STRATEGY” session with me by going here.

Do you need “Accomplishments” on your Resume?

Your resume is how employers first meet you…before they actually decide to have a conversation via email or telephone. Is your resume truly doing you any justice or causing you to get tossed in the throw away pile EVERY TIME?

In a previous video, I talked about how the “Summary of Qualifications” replaced the objective section on a resume. You can watch that video..here’s link here…

You will also need to add what you have accomplished in your previous job opportunities to show how you applied the knowledge, skills and expertise to achieve positive or desired results. Your future employer needs to know you can create those positive or desired results for them as well, so showcasing your accomplishments communicate it to them directly. The accomplishments are helping to market you better than other candidates that only communicate their skills, knowledge base and credentials.

If you want to make sure your current resume is marketing you well enough to have employers contact you directly, you can use my resume review resource by going to https://mentorshelly.com/services/toolsreview

Understand the “Power” of Networking in Business & Career

If you have ever been in a business or search for employment, you have heard the word “networking” thrown around as being an important part of your business development and job search. You are encouraged to attend networking events and polish off formulate your “elevator speech” to fire it at any human being within a 3 arms length away from you. The goal is to meet new people you hope are looking for your skills (for a job) or looking to do business with you.

What type of results do you think you will achieve with these events? What is your mental focus when you attend these events..just to place your business card in people’s hands or to truly make an authentic connection that lasts? Do you think the other attendees have the same wants and needs that you do? These are just some of the questions you should ask before even attending.

I recently started reading the book, Networking is Not Working by Derek Coburn which give a completely different perspective on networking in general. I learned that our mindset and intention when going to networking event is extremely vital to the efficiency of networking results. Every deliberate result starts with a thorough plan of action and purposeful execution, so your networking efforts should be no different.

When attending these events, go with the mindset of actually making a genuine connection with a few people and continue to keep in contact for mutually beneficial results. It is not always about what you can get from a person, but it is also what you can give that provides value to them personally and professionally. You must take the time to get to know their basics, by listening. I don’t mean just let people talk, I mean really listen. Listen for wants, needs, desires, wishes, voice tone, how they communicate about specific topics and their non verbal queues. You’d be surprised what people will divulge if you just really listen, then offer support. This is where true networking begins.

Networking can help you cross over into another industry and make connections you wouldn’t make otherwise. If you’re looking to make that transition and still don’t have a concrete plan, check out my FREE Resource while it is still FREE here.
