Parents…Are Your Kids Prepared for Their Professional Life?

Parents, you know at some point, your children have to grow up. Some kids want to rush the process, others want to take their own sweet time to get there. What these high school kids must understand, like you do, that TIME waits for NOBODY. In the current political and sociological climate, these kids must take their future professional life far more serious or they will be left behind economically and socially.

Depending on your ethnicity, culture and economic situation, the kids have to be even more prepared for the risks and unexpected roadblocks in the professional environment, just for living in their own skin. The more preparation these kids have, the better off their future professional prospects will be. Sometimes I wish an experienced professional had taken me under their wings and showed me the ropes, so I would not have had to learn by being “baptized by fire”. I want your kids to not have to go through that, so here are four things they can do to start preparing:

1. Figure out what they really want to do or like doing professionally. They can start by using my FREE MentorShelly DREAM Career Guide to help them figure this out.

2. Create their first set of career marketing tools (resumes, letters of recommendations and cover letters). Keep in mind that high school kids may not have much
experience, but they can use what they know how to do now and letter of recommendation from their teachers, sport team leaders they may be involved with in school or community or from volunteer group leaders for activities they are involved. If your kids already have some of these career tools and need to review them, MentorShelly can help by offering Career Tools Review Service to assure the tools are working for them or for you as a parent in the professional
environment.

The kids need to be prepared for the job/career interviews. You can utilize sample questions on the internet or if you are looking for more targeted help with this for you and your kids, check out the interview audio series here to get the help you need.

Learn and utilize negotiations strategies once they are offered job opportunities. The negotiations may not apply in their first job but any jobs or career opportunities after that…they will absolutely need to understand what to say, what questions or ask and how to respond to future employers. If your kid or you struggle in this area, then schedule a Career Strategy Session, to make the most of the career opportunities.

To make sure your kids are ready for all the challenges they will face with growing up in such a changing environment, do your best to teach them early. The best way to give them the competitive edge in the professional environment is to provide the with the necessary career tools and strategies, so they can win economically.

Dear High School Grads…Do you want to live with your parents in your 30s and 40s? – Part 3

As much as your parents love you and genuinely want to help you….secretly they want you to be fully functional independent adult not dependent on them to provide things like food, clothes, shelter and other basic necessities for you. Some of you may have been raised in households that instilled your independence already. If you fit that description, then you have some of the tools to start working towards your financial independence. If you have no idea I am talking about or can’t relate in any way, then I wrote this piece especially for you.

6 Things you MUST DO to get and keep your economic independence soon after high school graduation. In the first part of the series, we talked about creating a career an economic plan for yourself for the next 10-15 years, so life doesn’t have to slap you around to learn to plan and execute. The first part of the series explored the importance of planning out your career and business path by WRITING THEM DOWN. If you didn’t get the opportunity to read the first part of the series, you can do so by clicking HERE.

In the second part of the 6-Part Series, we discussed the importance of understanding personal credit and how it direct affects your career and/or business opportunities now and in the future. There were also important resources provided on first understanding personal credit and learning how to use it properly. If you have not had the opportunity, go and check out Part 2 of the 6-Part Series Here. Now get into the 3rd thing you need to do to gain your career and economic independence from your parents….

3. Have your career tools ready such as your resumes, cover letters, letters or recommendation and other key resources for job/career opportunities you want or aspire to obtain.

I have a question? Do you know what a resume is? If you don’t know….then a resume, according to the American Standard Dictionary is a brief account of a person’s education, qualifications and previous experience, usually prepared to be given to the human resources personnel or company decision maker usually submitted with a job application during the job/career search process. I wanted to make sure you knew what a resume or cirrculum vitae (CV) was and it’s relevance to your job/career search. You need the resume to give your current and future employers a snapshot of what skills, qualifications and education can be utilized for their business and professional needs. If your resume does not answer those questions for the potential employer, then it’s not doing it job of marketing you very well. If you are struggling or need to make sure your resume is doing its job of marketing you well, then check out the resource to assure this career tool is truly working to benefit your career goals.

In addition to your resume, you will also need cover letter(s) and letters or recommendation. If you don’t know what a cover letter is, then here the merriam-webster’s official definition: a letter sent with, and explaining the contents of, another document or a parcel of goods. In this case, the cover letter is sent with your “resume” to explain important pieces of your resume or job application matching it up with your credentials and interest in the open position. Nowadays, you cannot apply for decently paid position online unless you have these tools prepared and ready for use. If you do not have any of these tools ready and need help with getting the resume and the cover letter done, check out this resource to get your tailored career tools completed and working for you!

If you already have your resume and cover letter but they are not working to get you callback and interviews for the jobs or career opportunities you are applying for, then use this resource to get your career tools reviewed and structured to work for you in the job market.

Know this, I understand how you feel about all the changes surrounding the level of responsibility you know have for your own career and economic life. It even more difficult, when you don’t have a plan. So, let’s go over the what the 6-Part Series has gone over so far…. Part 1 Create a career and economic plan for your life; Part 2 Learn about how your personal credit works now… and we just wrapped up Part 3 of the 6-Part Series.

In Part 4 of the 6-Part Series, we are going to discuss How to Prepare Yourself to handle job/career interviews and business meetings, LIKE A BOSS!

Dear High School Grads…Do you want to live with your parents in your 30s and 40s? – Part 1

I know that things and times have changed as it pertains to the way you guys deal with life issues and problems. As millennials, you have found innovative ways to communicate through social media, navigate information and carry on major conversation through the awesome power of technology. I truly applaud you for taking advantage of how technology makes all of our lives convenient but some areas of life are based on principles and maturity. No amount of technology is going to exempt you of going through the maturation process of earning your economic independence from your parents home.

Let’s get started with the first thing….

1. Create a career and economic plan of action for the next 10-15 years of your life with deadlines. Sometimes, we make something very simple become very complicated, all because we are unwilling to take action. Creating a plan for your economic life and independence is simple as you getting a notebook with a pen and paper to start writing. The career and economic plan may start off something like this…

a. What do I want to do with my life after high school in terms of dreams and aspirations? Write it

b. What type of job or business do I want to start now? Write it down. If you are struggling with this
part of the plan, you can check out the FREE DREAM Career Guide to help you figure out the ideal job,
career path or business specifically tailored to you.

c. Depending on what job, career path or business you decide on, what tools, certifications, equipment,
specific education or overall resources will you need to get started? Write it down

d. Depending on the length of time your career or business aspirations take, what will you do to earn
money to take care of your basic needs in the meantime? Write it down
If you are looking for in-depth industry specific career and business aspirations tailored to you,
then check out our resource to get your tailor-made career and/or business guidance specific to YOU.

e. Based on personal preferences, what type of house, apartment or tiny house do you want to live in? Do
you want to rent, own, sublease? How much per month will it cost you to live there? Will the job,
career or business be able help you pay the monthly living expenses? Are you familiar with what a
budget is? Just in case you don’t know, the definition of a budget is a plan you write down to decide
how you will spend your money each month. A budget helps you make sure you will have enough money
every month. Without a budget, you might run out of money before your next paycheck. It also shows you
how much money you make and how much money you spend. Click here to view an example of a budget to start your responsible financial journey.

To some of you, this laundry list of things may sound like a lot to do, but imagine going through your adult life aimlessly without a plan. Unfortunately, I had to learn the hard way by having LIFE knock me down a few times for me to understand why this wise person once quoted, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”. You would not believe how truthful quote describes our lives. I also do not want you to miss my emphasis on WRITING THESE THINGS DOWN. The first step to taking the necessary action, it to document it, then take action.

In the next portion of our 6-Part Series, we will talk about learning about how your personal credit works NOW before your credit ends up trapping you financially. I want you new or soon to be graduates to walk around the hot burning fire hoops I had to experience in my first few years after graduating from high school. It’s always better to learn from other people’s mistakes than enduring them yourself. As always, if you have questions or concerns, please reach out to me at mentorshelly3@gmail.com or click on the gray “Send Voicemail” tab on the right side of the screen to leave me a voicemail message and I will return the call within 24-48 hours.
