Let’s be real for a second: the idea of talking about money in an interview can make you feel like your brain just unplugged itself and walked away.
But guess what? If you don’t negotiate your salary, you’re basically telling your future paycheck, “Eh, surprise me.”
We don’t do surprises when rent is due, student loans are real, and your iced coffee habit isn’t going anywhere.
So if you’re a Gen Zer entering the workforce or leveling up in your career—and nervous about asking for more money—I’ve got your back with actual word-for-word scripts you can use. No fluff, no awkward vibes, just confidence (even if you’re faking it till you make it).
💼 Script #1: When They Ask for Your Salary Expectations First
Say this:
“Based on my research and the industry standards for this role in [City/State], I’m looking for a salary in the range of [$X – $Y], depending on the total compensation package and responsibilities.”
Why it works:
You sound informed, confident, and open—but you’re still leading the convo. Not playing “guess my value” games.
🧠 Bonus Tip: Always do your salary research ahead of time. (P.S. I wrote a whole blog about how to do that right here.)
🧾 Script #2: When They Lowball You (and You Know It)
Say this:
“Thank you for the offer. Based on my research and the value I bring to the team, I was expecting something closer to [$X]. Is there flexibility in the budget to meet that range?”
Why it works:
You’re not being rude—you’re being assertive. You’ve done your homework. You’re showing gratitude and requesting what’s fair.
😎 You’re not just taking what they give. You’re reminding them what you’re worth.
🚀 Script #3: When You Want to Buy Time (Because You’re Internally Screaming)
Say this:
“I really appreciate the offer—thank you! I’d like to take 24–48 hours to review the full compensation package and get back to you.”
Why it works:
You buy yourself time to breathe, process, and (possibly) talk to your career coach 👋🏾 (hi, I’m her). This avoids emotional decision-making and shows professionalism.
🎯 Script #4: When You’re Negotiating Perks or Benefits Instead of Salary
Say this:
“If the base salary is firm, would there be room to explore a signing bonus, additional PTO, or remote work flexibility?”
Why it works:
If salary is locked, you still have leverage. Many companies are more flexible with benefits than they are with base pay.
🧠 Remember: total compensation > just salary.
💬 Script #5: When You’re Accepting the Offer (With Confidence)
Say this:
“Thank you for working with me through this process. I’m excited to accept the offer at [$X], and I’m looking forward to getting started with the team!”
Why it works:
You’re sealing the deal with professionalism and confidence. Not “thank you for choosing me”—you chose them too.
Negotiation Isn’t Being “Difficult.” It’s Being Strategic.
If you’re nervous, that’s normal. But here’s the truth:
Companies expect you to negotiate.
Hiring managers don’t think less of you—they respect it when you advocate for yourself. And the worst they can say is no. You’ll still live.
