Starting an Online Business – First Few Steps After a Layoff

Let’s face it—getting laid off sucks. Whether you saw it coming or it hit you like an unexpected plot twist in your favorite Netflix series, it can leave you wondering, “What now?”

But here’s the good news: a layoff doesn’t have to be a dead-end. Sometimes, it’s just life’s way of nudging you into that entrepreneurial lane you’ve been side-eyeing for years. So before you curl up in your favorite blanket with a pint of ice cream and your resume in hand, consider this: what if this is your perfect moment to start your online business?

If you’re ready to rebuild your career on your terms, here are the first few steps to get started:

🔹 1: Identify the Skill People Will Pay You For

You know that thing you do effortlessly that others are always asking you about? That’s your goldmine. Whether it’s graphic design, HR consulting (hey hey!), baking cookies with personality, or making spreadsheets that sing—that’s your starting point.

Ask yourself:

  • What problems do I solve naturally?

  • What have people paid me (or wanted to pay me) for in the past?

  • Can this be delivered digitally, remotely, or as a service?

Spoiler alert: the answer is usually yes.

🔹 2: Package Your Offer (Keep It Simple, Sis)

You don’t need a 10-page website or a fancy logo to start making money online. All you need is one clear offer and a way for people to pay you.

Start with:

  • A simple description of what you do

  • Who it helps

  • How it solves their problem

  • A way to book or pay you (CashApp, PayPal, Stripe, etc.)

Think of it like this: If someone asked you, “What do you do and how can I hire you?”—you should be able to answer in 60 seconds or less. Elevator pitch, but make it digital.

🔹 3: Announce It Loudly (and Often)

This is not the time to be shy. Your bills aren’t shy. 😅
Post on your social platforms, tell your friends, update your LinkedIn. You are open for business, and the world needs to know.

Say something like:

“Hey folks! After a recent job change (aka layoff 😅), I’ve decided to finally step into entrepreneurship. I’m now offering [insert your service], and I’d love your support—whether that’s hiring me or sharing my info with someone who needs it!”

You’d be surprised how many people are looking for what you have to offer.
