You guys wanting to know what the secret weapon is… 🥁 Drumroll, please… It’s Skill Building
I can still remember my first job hunt? Picture this: stacks of job listings, each one asking for experience I didn’t have, skills I barely knew existed, and qualifications that seemed a light-year away. But here’s where our secret weapon comes into play.

Skill building is about arming yourself with a robust set of tools—both hard skills, like coding or graphic design, and soft skills, like communication and teamwork. This combo makes you irresistible to employers. Think of it as your personal arsenal for the job battlefield.

1. How to Identify Which Skills to Develop
Start by playing detective 🔍. Dive into job descriptions in your field of interest. You can go to bls.gov to search your desired industry or career paths you want to pursue to get a better picture. Notice any recurring skills? Bingo! Those are the skills you should work to acquire. For me, it was human resources management that popped up when I was in college initially had marketing as my major. One HR Seminar in school made all the difference in swaying me into the human resources field and the rest is history.

2. Strategies for Skill Acquisition
The internet is your oyster here. Online courses, workshops, even YouTube tutorials—there’s a treasure trove of knowledge out here. I honed my HR skills through college courses but you can find free or paid courses on websites like Udemy.com, Skillshare.com, Coursera and other platforms specific to your industry. You can also check out your libraries, community centers and local schools for free or nearly free programs. You can use real-life experience, even from your projects, can be useful in acquiring the necessary skills. Let’s say you created graphics in Canva for your friend’s Youtube channel and flyers for carwashes for your church. The graphic design skills you got from creating those images are useful in many ways. This is a prime example of a hard skill.

3. Soft Skills: The Often Overlooked Game Changer
Don’t underestimate the power of soft skills. My first job interview was a disaster for many reasons but I realized that effective professional communication, teamwork and collaboration are just some of the soft skills needed to be successful in the job market. Keep in mind, different soft skills may be needed, depending on your chosen career field. Cultivating empathy, adaptability, and leadership can often tip the scales in your favor, so make sure you showcase that in all of your business interactions. You can acquire these soft skills through courses and free online resources like Youtube University as well 😊. You do have to learn and practice them, it’s not just saying you’re a professional at communication. Remember, if you can learn how to tie your shoes, you can learn the important soft-skills that’s going to put money in your pocket

4. Showcasing Your Skills Effectively
Alright, now you’ve got the necessary skills, now show them off! Tailor your resume to highlight these new superpowers. And don’t just list them—show how they’ve made a difference in real situations. Use your resume to communicate how your acquired skills helped you to accomplish some academic and personal goals, if it aligns with the job you are applying for. My breakthrough moment came when I revamped my resume to focus on results I achieved and how it can benefit the future employer, not just tasks. Suddenly, interviews! You’ll need your soft skills here as well to communicate your value and share how your skills can help the employer in your interviews…but that’s going to be another blog.

5. Networking: Your Strategic Ally
Remember, it’s not always what you know, but who you know. Networking can open doors you didn’t even know existed. Start building your network early—attend industry meetups, join online forums, and don’t shy away from reaching out to professionals you admire. A simple LinkedIn message can lead to invaluable connections.

So there you have it, the secret weapon that’s going to give you a head start in your career journey: skill building, paired with a sprinkle of networking magic. Remember, the path may not always be straight, but with patience, persistence, and a commitment to learning, you’re going to make it. And hey, I’m cheering for you every step of the way!
