Laid Off? Here’s Your 30-Day Plan to Rebuild Your Career

So, you got laid off. It sucks—I won’t sugarcoat it. One minute, you’re grinding away at your job, and the next, you’re handed a pink slip, a severance check (if you’re lucky), and a “best of luck” email.

Now what?

Before you spiral into panic mode, take a breath. Getting laid off isn’t the end—it’s a new beginning (even if it doesn’t feel like it right now). You just need a plan, and I’ve got one for you.

Your 30-Day Career Rebuild Plan

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how to go from laid off to back in the game—stronger and smarter than before.

Week 1: Reset & Regroup

Process Your Emotions – Losing a job is a shock, so allow yourself time to be frustrated, sad, or even a little angry. But don’t stay there. This is just a chapter, not your whole story.
Review Your Finances – Take stock of what’s in your bank account, what severance (if any) you received, and how long you can sustain yourself. Cut non-essential expenses immediately.
File for Unemployment (if needed) – There’s no shame in getting support while you rebuild. Apply ASAP so you don’t run into delays.
Update Your Resume & LinkedIn – Start fresh. Employers are watching, and you want to be ready when opportunities come your way.
Tell Your Network – Let people know you’re on the market. A simple LinkedIn post saying, “I’m exploring new opportunities in [industry]—any leads or referrals would be greatly appreciated!” can work wonders.

Week 2: Strategize & Apply Smart

Set Your Career Goal – Do you want to stay in the same industry, pivot to something new, or start a business? Get clear on your next move.
Research Target Companies – Make a list of companies you’d love to work for and start following their job openings.
Apply for Jobs Daily – Don’t just submit your resume—tailor it for each role. Make sure you include keywords from the job description to pass ATS filters.
Reach Out to Recruiters – Connect with hiring managers and recruiters in your field. Slide into their LinkedIn DMs with a professional, straight-to-the-point message.
Polish Your Interview Skills – You WILL get callbacks. Be ready to sell yourself confidently.

Week 3: Level Up Your Skills & Build Momentum

Take a Course or Certification – If your industry is shifting, now’s the time to upgrade your skills. Free and low-cost platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning can help.
Network Like a Boss – Attend virtual or in-person industry events. Let people see your value before you even apply.
Start a Side Hustle (If You Want) – Need quick cash? Freelancing, consulting, or gig work can keep you afloat while you job hunt.
Prepare for Interviews – Research common questions in your industry. Mock interviews are your best friend, so practice, practice, practice.

Week 4: Execute & Land That Offer

Follow Up on Applications – Sent out job applications? Circle back with recruiters and hiring managers. A follow-up email can put you at the top of their list.
Negotiate Your Offer – When that job offer comes, don’t just accept it—NEGOTIATE. Know your worth and ask for what you deserve.
Secure Your Next Role – Whether it’s a new job, freelance work, or launching your own thing, celebrate your resilience. You made it through.
