How to Get a Job Without a Resume

In today’s job market, it is not uncommon to hear about people who have applied to hundreds of jobs and have only received a handful of callbacks. Our friends and family tell us that we need to update our resume or that we are not “putting ourselves out there” enough. With the rise of social media, many job seekers are feeling the pressure to have an online presence that is “perfect” in order to attract recruiters. The truth is, you do not need a resume or an online presence that is “perfect” to get a job. Here are five ways to get a job without a resume:

1) Network, network, network!
The best way to find a job is through someone you know. According to a study done by the Relationship Building Institute, approximately 70% of people find their jobs through networking. You should reach out to your family and friends and let them know that you are looking for a job. Ask if they know anyone who is hiring or if they would be willing to make an introduction for you. Attend industry events and meetups; you never know who you will meet and what opportunities will arise.

2) Check out online job boards
There are many online job boards such as Indeed, Monster, and Craigslist. These websites are great resources for finding jobs in your area without having to submit a resume. All you need to do is create a profile and start searching for jobs that interest you. Most of these websites also allow you to set up alerts so you will be notified when new jobs that match your criteria are posted.

3) Apply directly on company websites
Another great way to find a job without a resume is by applying directly on company websites. Many companies have an “About Us” or “Careers” section on their website where they list available positions. Be sure to read the job descriptions carefully and follow the instructions on how to apply. You may be asked to submit a cover letter or fill out an application, but in most cases, you will not be asked for a resume.

4) Go through temp agencies
If you are having difficulty finding a full-time position, temp agencies can be a great resource. Temp agencies can help place you in short-term or long-term positions in various industries. Most temp agencies do not require a resume; all you need to do is complete an application and undergo an interview process. This can be a great way to get your foot in the door at companies where you might want to work full-time down the road.

5) Speak with headhunters/recruiters
Headhunters or recruiters can be another valuable resource when looking for a job without a resume. Headhunters are typically hired by companies to find candidates for specific positions. They usually have access to jobs that are not yet advertised publicly and they will already have relationships with hiring managers at the companies they work with. When meeting with headhunters or recruiters, be sure to dress professionally and come prepared with questions about available positions or companies they work with that might interest you.

A well-written resume is certainly helpful when applying for jobs, but it is not always necessary— especially if you take advantage of the other options that are available to job seekers. Networking, online job boards, company websites, temp agencies, and headhunters/recruiters can all be great resources for finding employment without having to rely on a resume. So next time you’re feeling discouraged because you don’t think your resume is good enough, remember that there are other options available to help you land your dream job!
