3 Undeniable Signs your Job search efforts are not working & What you can do to make it work

Are you unemployed or “underemployed” looking for a much better opportunity and seem to be getting nowhere?

If your full time job is looking for a job…there may be some things that might be missing from your job search that could be hurting, not helping your chances of getting the job you want. I want you to know that I have been there before…literally! I know what it’s like to spend hours each day on the computer editing your resume and cover letter to fit every job you’re applying to. Each time uploading your resume to each of these companies applicant tracking system (ATS) only for the system to autofill your information in the wrong place, so you have to fix each one… Pounding the pavement to handing our resumes and business cards to every business that may be looking for your experience, qualifications and educational background…

All that effort you’re putting out…only to hear NOTHING as responses to your job search efforts is downright FRUSTRATING!!!! I know this job/career search process was frustrating for me, until I started evaluating how I was applying my efforts. I also started learning how things work from the human resources recruiters or also known as talent acquisition specialist perspective, as I gain more human resources experience. Once I realized the signs, I also figured out what to do about the signs…so let’s get into it…

Sign #1 – Your resume does not answer the key question that recruiters, company owners and hiring managers are asking after looking at your resume for 15-30 seconds…The primary questions they are asking…can you do the job you are applying for based on the information on your resume? Do you have the specific experience and qualifications to do the job well? If you’re not sure your resume answers any of those questions or recruiters, hiring managers and company owners, check out this resource to make sure your resume answers this questions right away!

Sign #2 You have only applied to a few jobs but expect to see positive results right away. First, let me say this…just like sales people have to put in the work with their sales goals completing as many sales calls, you have to complete as many applications as possible to see results. I know this sounds old school but principles are timeless. You have plant enough seeds in order for you receive and benefit from the harvest. If you only apply to three jobs in a week, then don’t expect opportunities to just automatically fall in your lap. You have to put in way more work than that to see the true benefit, especially in this job market. Sign #3 You have not received any responses to your job applications on or offline. This sign can be frustrating but your resumes and cover letters you are using may not be fully tailored to the jobs or career opportunities you are applying. For example, you would not list the same set of skills for a construction worker job, then apply for a telephonic customer service job. The skills and qualifications you have listed on your resume(s) may not fit the jobs you are applying, so the ATS system may not even place your application or resume for the hiring managers, recruiters or company owners to even review. Cover letters…Are they obsolete?

In this new season of automation, the rise of e-commerce shutting down traditional retail stores, it seems that some of the younger generation thinks that some manual processes are obsolete. Like an old computer, the new generation want to toss out some of the old career processes and tools when they do not understand the real reasons they have been in place. We also have corporations who have embraced technology to make their lives easier as well.

The picture of a human resources clerk reviewing resumes and cover letters physically has now been replaced by applicant tracking systems. Although, the advances in technology help human resources officers and decision makers to gain efficiency when processing potential candidates for an open position, it doesn’t give the job/career applicants permission to become lazy in the job or career search process. Just like I emphasize on having your resume work for you in the job market, your cover letter is no different.

Here are three reason your cover letter still works to your benefit in the job market, if you have a strategically well written one for your desired position.

1. First, you must understand the purpose of your cover letter. The main purpose of your cover letter is to sell employers on the skills and qualifications on your resume. The cover letter is another career marketing tool for you to highlight the most important aspects of your experience directly correlating with the job/career opportunity you are applying. 2. Secondly, most ATS require you to upload a copy of your resume and cover letter when applying for the job. The ATS may not accept your entire application because your cover letter is missing. I’ve also discussed with several human resource executives that refer to the applications where the cover letters are missing, gets pushed to the reject pile automatically. I would hate to know that you are feverishly applying to positions online but due to missing cover letter, you career/job opportunity goes down the drain of life. In other words, don’t be lazy! Get the cover letter done.

3. Thirdly, the quality of your cover letter can make or break your chances of even getting called in for an interview. Your cover letter is the first introduction the decision maker or human resources officer has of you. Make a tremendously positive impression by having your cover letter represent you well. Listen, I know you may be nervous and jittery about your next job interview, especially if it’s for an awesome opportunity you’ve been looking forward to.

Whatever you do, please AVOID these six actions I’m about to discuss…if you have any hope of landing this job or career opportunity.

The first thing to AVOID – Being late.

The second thing to AVOID – Dressing inappropriately.

The third thing to AVOID – Bringing your phone in the interview with the ringer on.

The fourth thing to AVOID – Going to the interview not knowing anything about the company.

The fifth thing to AVOID – Being dismissive or not paying attention to the receptionists or front desk personnel.

This is the 6th and final part of the six part series. You can find the first five parts of the interview series in previous posts on the site, if this is your first time being introduced to the information. So, let’s jump right into this…

Avoid #6 Going to the interview without copies of your resumes, professional references, professional business cards or other relevant career tools.

It’s so important to have your career tools handy, especially during an interview. Keep in mind, the interviewer may not ask for it but if they do…then have them ready! Think of this interview process using your career tools as target practice…the job or career opportunity is the target and each of your career tools (resume, cover letter, thank you letter-post interview, business cards, letters of recommendation) are arrow used to hit the target.

If you don’t have your career tools, your targeted job or career opportunity may eventually slip away. Do you want career opportunities to slip away because you weren’t ready? I think not.
